John Spellar

Labour MP for Warley

An undercover investigation by the Daily Mail has revealed appalling details of aggressive fundraising tactics by companies working on behalf of many of Britain’s leading charities.

Warley MP John Spellar who raised this issue in Parliament in May following the death of pensioner Olive Cook, who had been pursued by fundraisers, commented on the latest revelations.

John Spellar MP said:-

“These shocking revelations show that the charities have still not understood the public’s revulsion at these tactics by unscrupulous fundraisers.  I am not sure that they realise how damaging this is to their reputation and to the very good work that many of them do.

“I am pleased that the Minister indicated that he was going to be taking action, but these stories show that he needs to be pursuing this much more energetically and the charities should respond urgently and sever their links with these organisations and review their whole fund raising model.”
