John Spellar MP calls on Government to ‘get on with’ Heathrow Airport expansion

In a submission to the Department for Transport’s consultation on Airport Capacity, Black Country MP and former Transport Minister John Spellar urged the Government to go ahead with the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

He pointed out that as Transport Minister he had considerable input into drawing up the White Paper which recommended expanding Heathrow Airport – as far back as 2003.

In a sharp criticism of the Conservative Government’s delays and dithering on airport capacity, Mr Spellar said it was “welcome to see the Conservative Party at long last come round to an idea proposed by the Labour Government well over a decade ago, finally putting the national interest ahead of petty political games.”

His submission pointed out the support for expanding Heathrow of both the business community and trade unions, as well as the benefits expanding Heathrow will bring to the West Midlands, which he said “is forecast to receive an increase of £9.7 billion GDP from Heathrow along with 12,000 new jobs by 2050.”

Mr Spellar concluded by saying: “There has never been a clearer political consensus on such a large industrial decision. In the post-Brexit environment, it is even more essential to ensure that secure, well-paid jobs are available to hard-working British people as well as signalling to the world that Britain is open for business.”
