Black Country MP John Spellar gave a cautious welcome to Government plans to build some of the trains for the new West Midlands rail franchise in Bombardier’s Derby factory.
81 out of 107 new trains are set to be manufactured in Derby while the other trains will be made by Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF).
John Spellar said: “Unlike previous rail contracts, it is finally welcome to see some of a manufacturing contract awarded to a UK-based firm, supporting British workers.”
“We should not have to celebrate the fact Government awards a contract to British-based workers – this should be standard operating procedure for all Government departments.”
“The Whitehall elite still don’t understand that one of the main reasons people voted for Brexit is the way the bureaucrats routinely refuse to back British jobs.”
“No other country in Europe behaves like this – and I hope that the Government will continue to listen to myself and other Labour colleagues and back British jobs.”
