MPs across parties in Westminster have joined to pay tribute to the incredible bravery of the firefighters who tackled the Grenfell Tower Fire.
One of these, Black Country MP John Spellar said: “In spite of the Government cuts, our firefighters across the country carry out a vital service daily, of which Grenfell Tower is the most extreme example.
“However, the service – especially in the big conurbations – is being stretched to breaking point. That is why the cuts must be halted. The huge knowledge base within the Fire Brigades Union makes it vital that they must play a central role as participants in the Public Inquiry.”
Early day motion 8: BRAVERY AND ROLE OF FIREFIGHTERS
That this House pays tribute to the incredible bravery of the firefighters who tackled the horrific fire at Grenfell Tower; recognises that firefighters went into the face of extraordinary danger in service of the public; notes that firefighters carry out this service daily throughout the UK; further recognises that they have faced a significant cut in living standards over recent years; calls on the Government to reverse all cuts to funding to the fire and rescue services; and further calls on the Government to ensure that the Fire Brigades Union plays a central role as participants in the public inquiry, that whole time firefighters are available throughout the country 24-hours a day and that they are given the pay and job security that they deserve.
