Warley Member of Parliament John Spellar and a number of Midlands and London colleagues have written to the Defence Minister urging him to support a National Memorial to the contribution to the Sikh community particularly in the First World War.
This would involve the Ministry of Defence sorting out a site in Central London and the Sikh community organising contributions to pay for the memorial.
John Spellar MP said:-
“The Sikh community have played a considerable part in Britain’s Armed Forces for well over a century. It’s especially relevant and will remember this during the commemorations of the First World War when over a 130,000 Sikhs soldiers were involved in Allied Forces.
“I am delighted at the suggestion from the Sikh Community that they will be organising contributions to pay for the memorial and we have urged the Defence Secretary to work to arrange an appropriate Central London location.”
