Warley MP John Spellar recognises ‘unsung heroes’ who keep the high street alive
John Spellar MP was delighted to attend the launch of a new report which reveals how food and drink wholesalers are supplying and supporting a growing network of independent shops and restaurants in Warley and across the UK.
As consumers turn their back on edge-of-town superstores in favour of smaller, more frequent shopping trips, The Whole Story reveals that wholesalers help to keep our high streets alive, provide essential local services and offer choice to consumers by supporting small independent businesses.
John Spellar MP said:
“The six food and drink wholesale depots in Warley are not only important local employers, but also play a vital role in the local economy and the diversity of our high streets by supporting small independent shops and restaurants. I was delighted to meet some of them today and hear more about these unsung heroes of the food and drink supply chain.”
James Bielby, Chief Executive of the Federation of Wholesale Distributors, said:
“Food and drink wholesale distributors play a vital role in the economic and social health of the United Kingdom, providing and supporting jobs in all regions of the nation and ensuring that essential provisions are available to all. In a retail and catering sector where the largest players have historically had the loudest voice, this report redresses the imbalance by demonstrating the enormous value of wholesale distributors and their supply chain partners.”
