Today at Prime Minister’s Questions, Black Country MP John Spellar called on the Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ‘take back control’ and ‘give instructions to the Treasury, Cabinet Office, to Whitehall and town halls to actually buy British and protect British jobs.’
Spellar pointed out that the new blue British passports were being made in Poland by a French company. Previously they were made by De La Rue in Gateshead.
In his response, the Prime Minister refused to commit to change Government procurement guidelines to prioritise buying British.
After the exchange, Spellar commented: ‘Our economy is being hit hard by the Coronavirus pandemic, yet the Government, pathetically, will not commit to backing British industry and manufacturing.’
‘Working people want the Government to know that they have their Government’s backing – it is absurd that the Prime Minister refuses to do so. No other major economy behaves like this.’
John Spellar: Thank you Prime Minister for getting things moving on the Disclosure and Barring Scheme. It was also good to hear the PM, belatedly, adopting the policy of ‘Jobs, Jobs, Jobs’. But does he mean jobs in the UK or in France, Poland, Germany, Korea and China. It is all very well announcing, for example, blue passports. But those are now not being produced in the North East, but by a French company in a Polish factory. So, Prime Minister, will you now ‘take back control’ and give instructions to the Treasury, Cabinet Office, to Whitehall and town halls to actually buy British and protect British jobs, jobs jobs.
Boris Johnson: Mr Speaker my honourable friend behind me says from a sedentary position ‘what’s he got against Poland’. We will create hundreds of thousands of jobs in this country, we will actively buy British, we will ensure that contracts go to great British companies Mr Speaker, but what we will not do is turn our faces against the notion of international free trade and the market that has brought colossal wealth to the people of this country. Those are the economics of the mad house.
