In his ongoing campaign to get Government bodies to ‘buy British’, Black Country MP John Spellar today called on the Government to ‘put British industry first and get the production lines moving.’
In Questions to Business Secretary Alok Sharma, Spellar highlighted the ‘tsunami’ of expected job losses caused as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Saying that ‘What industry really needs right now is orders. That is to get the lines running – not just for the big companies, but for the whole supply chain.’
A change of the role of Government is needed, Spellar argued, that should see itself ‘not just as regulator and funder – but also as customer.’ Too often, Government (national, local and Government bodies) let down ‘British industry and British workers – claiming they’re bound by so-called EU rules.’
Now Britain has left the EU, it was time to stop the excuses, shake things up and back British industry and workers.
