In Parliament today, Black Country MP John Spellar demanded that the Government allow proper Parliamentary scrutiny on future lockdown plans.
In Business Questions, Spellar said that the renewal, or otherwise, of the lockdown was ‘the most important issue facing the country’. Many ‘sporting and leisure venues have invested in helpful and costly improvements’ in making their venues more COVID-secure and need ‘some degree of change, some degree of help and some actual opportunity’. He added that MPs from different political parties were keen ‘to move on from risk avoidance to evidence-based risk management.’
He called on the Government to provide an ‘urgent, focused debate and a vote’ on future lockdown proposals – with opportunity for MPs to provide meaningful input and amendment, rather than a Government proposal for MPs to just approve or reject.
