Black Country MP and former Defence Minister declared his shock at an admission by former Cabinet Minister Andrea Leadsom over lack of pandemic preparedness.
Both MPs were appearing on ITV’s Central Lobby and Leadsom claimed that during her time in Cabinet she was ‘never aware of preparations for pandemics’ and that it ‘was not something [she] was ever included in’.
Spellar said he was ‘astonished to hear that there doesn’t seem to have been deep planning’ for a pandemic. He recalled having been involved in planning exercises during his time as a Defence Minister. This seems to have been neglected subsequently, particularly during Jeremy Hunt’s tenure as Health Secretary.
Spellar went on to point out that much like PPE procurement, the lack of ability to really ramp up vaccine production was down to Government abandonment of British manufacturing and manufacturing capacity.
