Changes are coming to car tax registration, but only half of UK drivers are aware. If they don’t pay they face a £1,000 fine and could also face penalties for cars they no longer own. That means anyone selling a car must tell the DVLA straightaway.
The Government claims this will save £10m a year in administration costs and will enable motorists to pay by direct debit.
Warley MP John Spellar and Transport Minister in the last Labour Government said:-
“Some of these are welcome changes, but I feel the Government has underestimated the teething problems and also the danger that tax evasion will increase. I fear that they are being complacent about this in the way they have been about abuses of parking enforcement. They need a strong publicity campaign so drivers are fully aware of the changes.”
