Warley MP and previous Transport Minister John Spellar has raised a storm on Twitter with his attack on George Osborne over work going to Chinese construction and train companies for HS2.
John Spellar MP said:-
“While I have grave doubts over the priority given to HS2 over other rail and transport projects, if the Government is determined to go ahead with it then the very least is that it should create jobs in the UK.
“We have great construction companies and two train manufacturing plants here in Britain. Indeed train building Japanese giant Hitachi who invented modern high speed rain have just built a new plant in the North East and are drawing from any British component companies. It’s extraordinary that the Government aren’t approaching them to build the new system. I am all for better relations and trade with China. Indeed the West Midlands are the only region of the UK which has a positive trade balance with China.
“However, that does not mean handing over British jobs to them. It seems to me a great lack of joined up thinking of this Government and George Osborne should think again. I am pleased at how many people across the country have retweeted this to show their agreement.”
