As Parliament returned from its summer recess, John Spellar MP attended the landmark launch event of Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s (CSW’s) Freedom of Religion or Belief “Parliamentary toolkit”.

Members of the House of Commons and Peers from the House of Lords heard how more than three quarters of the world’s population live in countries with severe restrictions on religious freedom. They also received a religious freedom parliamentary toolkit which recognises the important role MPs and Peers play in promoting religious freedom worldwide and gives parliamentarians effective tools to press the Government to protect religious freedom globally.

The Government was represented at the event by Tobias Ellwood MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister responsible for the Middle East and North Africa, Central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Counter Terrorism and Defence and International Security.

CSW has worked to raise a awareness of religious freedom violations around the world and advocated for the right to freedom of religion for those of all faith groups and none for over thirty years.

CSW’s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said at the launch:

“Freedom of religion or belief is a fundamental human right the world over. At a time where faith communities the world over are being persecuted, it’s more important than ever that our MPs are loud advocates for religious freedom. To this end, I’m really grateful to John.”

John Spellar MP said

“I was pleased to attend CSW’s launch of the freedom of religion parliamentary toolkit and learn about how I can speak up for this important human right. All over the world, faith groups like we have here in Warley suffer as a result of their beliefs, so it’s important to ensure we speak out for everyone’s freedom of religion or belief.”
