In the first Question session in the new Parliament, Black Country MP John Spellar was back on the warpath campaigning for public bodies buy British goods.
He demanded an answer from the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark over what the Government were doing to ensure public bodies buy British first.
Afterwards, John Spellar said: “I note with interest that the Secretary of State said that local value can now be taken into account, rather than what they’ve done up to now which believed cheapest was best.
“We will be pressing Government, Local Councils and the police to Buy British and they’d better have a good explanation if they fall down on the job.”

T7. While other countries, including our EU partners, have over the years used public purchasing to support their own industries, Britain often has not. As Brexit approaches, what are the Government doing to ensure that Government Departments, local services, emergency services, councils and other public bodies back British industry and British jobs by buying British first?
The right hon. Gentleman will know that we have already changed the procurement guidance so that local value can be taken into account. We have anticipated the issue he mentions and this is being done.
