Black Country MP John Spellar called on the Government to press ahead with expanding Heathrow Airport, saying that there had “never been a clearer political consensus on such a large industrial issue.”

He noted that, “expanding Heathrow enjoys the support of both the business community and trade unions” and that “over 30 Chambers of Commerce have expressed their support for the expansion of Heathrow, including Birmingham and the Black Country.”

In a submission to a consultation following the publication of the second draft of the National Policy Statement on a new runway at Heathrow, Mr Spellar blasted the Governments dithering and delaying regarding the decision, pointing out that, as transport minister he played a considerable role in drawing up the White Paper which recommended expanding Heathrow Airport – in 2003.

He further added that: “In the post-Brexit environment, it is even more essential to ensure that secure, well-paid jobs are available to hard-working British people as well as signalling to the world that Britain is open for business.”
