In Parliament today, Black Country MP John Spellar called on the Government back British workers and businesses across the United Kingdom.
‘Government purchasing rules and practice still grovel to so-called EU-rules’ claimed Spellar, ‘unlike, incidentally, most other EU countries’ he added.
Now that Britain had left the European Union, Spellar said ‘There are no more EU excuses’ and urged the Government to ‘act now!’

John Spellar: Thank you Mr Deputy Speaker. These structural arrangements are enormously important. but they only go so far, because so is political culture and drive to ensure we get Britain back to work. Yet, Government purchasing rules and practice still grovel to so-called EU-rules – unlike, incidentally, most other EU countries – but now they’re free of these rules, when are they going to actively back British business and British workers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are no more EU excuses. Act now!
Alok Sharma: The Rt. Hon. Gentleman – who I have enormous respect for – as ever, makes his case very forcefully. He talks about public procurement and I look forward to his thoughts as part of the consultation.
